Study: 74% of Twitter users have less than 10 followers

Despite Twitter’s rapid growth over the past year, a new study found that few members on the microblogging site can be classified as “True Twitter Users.” Researchers from Barracuda Networks defined a True Twitter User using three simple criteria: ten followers, follows ten people, and has posted at least ten tweets. Sounds simple, right?

Well, after analyzing more than 19 million Twitter accounts, the research team found that only 21 percent of the site’s users fell into the true user category with the remaining 79 percent lacking at least one of the three requirements.

Other tantalizing Twitter study tidbits:

  • 74 percent of users have less than ten followers
  • 17 percent of users have zero followers

I had No Ides of this #Twittfact! Shocking Indeed! Perhaps it's an issue of cultivation. Regularity and response?

Wow! Very interesting study! I would have never guessed that as huge a phenomenon as twitter that such a small percentage made the "true user category".

I'm quitting RIGHT NOW! (not really) The 21% who are legit are plenty enough for me. I imagine some people just have Twitter accounts so they can see what others are saying, or to place-hold their name in case they actually want to use Twitter in the future.

That almost qualifies as a personal problem

So what would a super-Tweeter look like? 100 followers, following 100 and 100 tweets?
