Susan Sontag on love

Writer, playwright and activist Susan Sontag lived through a fascinating shift in our cultural history, as this successful woman’s diary excerpts clearly show when she considers the topic of love.

Maria Popova at Brain Pickings recently combed through her diaries, published in As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals and Notebooks, 1964-1980 and picked a number of her thoughts on relationships, which were then illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton.

Usually, most of us choose to cherish the quotes portraying what we desire over what we experience, so Popova’s selections are unique in that they portray the vulnerability and keen insight of Sontag.

  1. Kate, These thoughts about Love closely mirror my own in many points. Do you think that is a rather general reaction, because they are more or less common to the experience of Love, or are her ideas outside the concepts shared by most people.?

I know the question is odd, but it somehow seems to me that you might, in your wisdom, and I say this with humble respect, be able to shed some light on this issue.

    Thank You,

    Michael Whelan
