Synthetic corneas lend sight to the blind
The new corneas eliminate the need for donor corneas and could restore sight to millions of people worldwide. The corneas are made from synthetic, laboratory-produced collagen.
Developed by scientists in Sweden, Canada and California, and when the new cornea is transplanted into a patient's eye, it encourages damaged cells to regenerate and colonize the new tissue. After two years a majority of patients with the artificial corneas had significantly improved vision.
