Terrifying simulation of a large asteroid impact with Earth [video]

Posted by / March 3, 2015

Kiss sleep goodbye folks, thanks to this simulation of a large asteroid impact with our home planet, courtesy of the Discovery Channel.

According to the YouTube description:

An asteroid with a diameter of 500 km. Destination: The Pacific Ocean. The impact peels the 10 km crust off the surface. The shockwave travels at hypersonic speeds. Debris is blasted across into low Earth orbit, and returns to destroy the surface of the Earth. The firestorm encircles the Earth, vaporizing all life in its way. Within one day, the surface of the Earth is uninhabitable. The evidence shows that this has happened at least six times in Earth’s history.

On the upside, we’d never know what hit us.

  • At least the mail will still be delivered.

  • We have Asteroid hunters looking all the time.. And some good Nuk’s to meet them before they get here. But? Will it work?

  • Not sure how Pink Floyd s dark side of the moon fit in…

  • knowing our planet… we’d discover 5 years in advance an asteroid bound to hit us. Scientists would come up with the plan within months to save us… but nothing would happen because the governments of the world would spend the entire time arguing over “who’s going to pay for that?”

  • Will i still have internet?

  • John Stewart

As a Green Lantern, I’d use my power ring to stop the asteroid.

And all of humanity would be saved!!

  • harry bailey

this is what happened to Mars millions of years ago

  • big lavato

I’d gladly surrender to this fiery fate if I had to hear the music accompaniment one more time.

  • I’ll be joining my son while listening to Pink Floyd.

  • God is in Control of Everything. Stop fearing and panic. Psalm 46:10

The time will come when this actually happens unless the nuc’s start flying. I have discovered that the people of this planet do not appreciate anything especially what they have. So I believe they deserve it and God will have to do what he should have done a long time ago. Give the planet back to the animals as they are not selfish nor greedy and nature will turn back the earth to the paradise it should be, minus man and women kind!.

  • And THAT is how you do global warming

Where ever you are, I wish you the best of everything.

The good Earth will be reborn and the human weed and it’s ugly foot print will be erased from it’s surface.

  • RandomHuman

Mr. Stinklemeyer, Dark side of the moon fits in anywhere.

  • We are more concerned with Global Warming it seems…. it then becomes a moot point.

  • you do realize this was put on youtube in full detail in 2011, right?

  • the last one that we saw coming had 2 weeks notice and was the size of a bus. it would have caused a lot of problems. the thing is that there really is no speed limit in space and if something the size of a bus was only spotted with 2 weeks notice, something 10 times the size coming 10 times as fast would still be 2 weeks notice. it could be 1000 times as large coming 1000 times as fast… we’re moving 100,000 kph around the sun. combined speeds from something coming really fast could really end us.

  • Debasish

    Mr, Donald Baker is Right.

  • Sorry to disappoint its creator, but beyond the fact that it is extremely well theatrically designed, the physics of this phenomenon is not taken into account. Water from the oceans due to its thermal conductivity act as a damper of the scorching waves. Therefore NOT all waters will be vaporized as well as not all humans will be erased. The real problem will be driven by the lack of oxygen and this is the biggest problem not the heat itself. Another observation which it is advisable to keep in mind is that this object as approach the earth brings a cone of void in his back. And I do not eliminate the hypothesis that this fact can push aside the earth atmosphere with its oxygen which allow burning and propagation of the waveform. A last remark is that despite that it is specified the dimension of the object as being 500 km in the dramatization video from a comparative observation the dimension is more appropriate to be as large of 1500 km.

  • There may be some “someone” in some “someplace” who’s job it is to determine when something like this may happen. Perhaps that person has the wisdom to change the trajectory of an object that is 310 miles in circumference. And weighs as much as all of the water in Lake Superior, Michigan, Erie and Ontario combined traveling at 30,000 MPH.
Perhaps that person even has an answer to getting that “something” constructed and deployed in time. And perhaps that “something” meant to deflect the thing coming to wipe us out DOESN’T destroy all of our space based technology trying to the job it was meant for………………….
………………………. Perhaps……………………………….. Until then, I believe in family, friends, cold beer, fast cars, beautiful American girls and a good steak…….. And football……. Come what may, life is worth the ride…

  • even if something close to that ever happen some would survive.
the problem is if a rock of that size hit the earth would it throw the plant out of orbit?

  • Jason

This isnt even new. Its a translated version of a Japanese video about a 300km asteroid impact from like 4 years ago.

  • tom

well to all of you, I still liked the song. its perfect for the end.

  • Billy Mayfield

Pink Floyd would manage about 6 bars and then it would be all over. At least it would be quick.

  • Man, that was some terrible music to go along with it. Don’t need to hear some girly-voiced singer shrieking in my ears.

  • GG

Not super realistic, lot of stuff missing that would happen. There would be more of an effect under it before it hit, lots more dust and fire, shock wave. An impact that size would have an effect on the other side of the world opposite the hit almost immediately, long before the fire wall and shock wave comes around. I am guessing it would happen a bit slower too.

  • Roaches laugh at this

  • joel flack

    ill just chug and shrug.

  • seriously this is from 2008

    Slow news day, huh?

  • The Lamb of God version is better. 🙂

  • I’m in favor if it gets rid of the Kardashians.

  • Are you serious? This video is almost 4 years old…. this online pub is just sad.

  • Asteroid’s are not round, planets and moons are round. It would be spotted for enough in advance, for me to pay 20 year old single malt scotch, some great cigars, and the time to enjoy them.

  • flyingpig

when will this happen please, i hope it will be soon. the sooner the better, this way the earth is dead and reborn agin hopefully htis time is far better then the last.

  • Joe

Why do you think that all countries are at the ISS in high gear; building SS crafts and NASA is searching for an inhabitable planets out there. An asteroid is not the only thing coming. Be aware and listen. I wish I was to be one of the selected. Where is Boeing spacecraft been since 2010 and the other X-37B. Only God knows when the time is near as mentioned in Revelations. I believe we are in the 4th or 5th Horseman currently for things that are yet to come. Our technology is now in High gear of being released. Just study of what is really going on.

  • sam

Joe, I do agree, and I’ve read all the other comments as well. Weither it’s 4 yrs. ago, 6 months from now or 20 yrs. into the future, I believe that science is looking for habital planets for a good reason. God, or whatever other enity others choose to credit will be the deciding factor. And yes, I believe we are in the final stages of things yet to come; I for one hope to be ready for what’s in store.

  • “On the upside, we’d never know what hit us….”

Ummm…really? No one would notice this huge space rock as it got closer and closer to Earth?

  • Jess Miller

It won’t happen. With our present technology we are capable to change course to anything as large as Ceres or Vesta. And with our present technology we are also capable to detect anything as large as the asteroid in that picture, years ahead.
