Remember how your high school gym teacher taught you how to take your heart rate? Yeah, neither do we and never seemed to do it right anyway, but now the great minds at MIT have found a way to let your phone do the hard work without ever having to lay a finger on it.
According to Ariel Schwartz at Fast Company:
The [Cardiio] app measures the amount of light reflected off the face, which matches up to the amount of blood pumped into the face (every time the heart beats, more blood is pumped).
It also keeps track of your heart rate over time and compares it to that of elite athletes (depressing) and members of the animal kingdom (kind of weird).
Your P.E. teacher might not be happy you forgot their sage advice, but they’ll be thrilled you’re still working out.
