The blurry rules of plagiarism for college students

The internet age has put a wealth of information just a few clicks away, making college papers a breeze compared to the days of typewriters and late nights at the library. The easy accessibility of information has also made plagiarizing as simple as a copy-and-paste, and now it seems fewer college students understand the seriousness of lifting text from the web.

In a digital world of pirated music and videos, the current generation of students does not see the same black-and-white rules of media and intellectual property that previous classes learned. A plethora of stories have emerged from university campuses across the country where professors busted students for lifting material off the internet and the students didn’t think they had done anything wrong.

My college professors threatened to chop our hands off if we even thought about plagiarizing, yet I see plenty of recent grads and current students (even Journalism and English majors) lifting material without blinking. Harumph--kids these days. :-/
