The web. Cyberspace. Zee old interwebs. Infobahn. Whatever you call it, the internet has changed the world, but how much do you know about the history of this little thing we all spend too much time on? Learn a little something, in handy infographic form no less.

Annie, your insight is always fresh and the way you lay out a "map" on a infographic is to be studied and admired. For this infographic, and possibly due to the job I had directly out of college, I knew of the Internet before anyone of my friends or college buddies. I could not speak of it, and I wasn't sure where it would go, but my dream was that it would allow learning, in whatever manner, to those who were not able to receive it at that time. I say whatever manner only because our system may not be the best for a child of a tribe in one of the growing central African countries or even for those students following me and my class.

What has really caught my attention on this piece, is the examples you use to show where we were with the Internet and then the Web. These samples mean things to younger learners, who may have had parents get them their own email address at birth - yes, it happens. However, if one looks to the type of entity which the sample represents we can see the various points of growth of this vast network of cables, power, discs, and content, of course. Though, we do not really know where it will take us, net neutrality could alter the best of dreams.

But more, and I am not trying to disagree with anything you have written, I believe that the growth of the Internet in the countries and regions where it is actually available to almost all people, shows me yet another instance of how the world is getting bigger, NOT smaller. We have more and more have-nots. They are removed from us by yet another technology and by money and corruption and more importantly, the need to find a way to grow food to feed their populations of wonderful people, and they need to find ways to do so in a sustainable manner. Yes, the Internet could bring them that information, but the cost would, instead, pay for experts and many others to be on the ground with them working to solve many of these problems, as we here can use distributed computing to help solve some of these realities.

Annie, I do not mean to put a damper on the wonderful work you do, but I am so tired of hearing, NOT FROM YOU, that the world is getting smaller. My final and so simple example: a man, maybe me, gets off of a red-eye flight from Seattle. The odd thing is that I went to Seattle early that morning for one of those meetings that needed face to face, real expressions in the meeting. I am picked up by the cab driver, just beginning his shift and he tells me how small the world is getting, yet he will not earn enough this year to be able to visit, via air travel, nieces and nephews in Seattle, Sitka, or Cairo.

I am sorry I am so off subject, but your work make my mind move into overdrive to absorb all that you have chosen to share. Thank you very much. It is much appreciated and makes me feel so inept when one visits, www.stephencarey.net. I have posts, you have stories. And, my livelihood and passion is storytelling. Life is odd, but I thank it for your presence at the same time I get to experience part of you.
