It’s hard to believe there was a time when Jim Henson had to pitch The Muppet Show, but, indeed, CBS had to be convinced that a wacky variety show hosted by Kermit D. Frog would be a hit with kids, eggheads and dirty hippies alike.

Fortunately, they took the bait and they were right.

Now you have the excuse of looking for all the hidden symbolism to watch the old shows again.

  1. This article is wrong. CBS were not convinced and did not take up the option to produce The Muppet Show. Instead it was produced and made in the the UK, at ATV Elstree Studios just north of London, by Sir Lew Grade’s ITC Entertainment corporation. The Muppet Show first aired on the ITV network in the UK and had a lot of British crew members and writers working on it. No US network wanted to make it. Please give proper credit to the people who put their hard work into making what is considered to be an American classic TV show.
