Start saving up your pennies, parents-to-be. According to a newly released government estimate, a middle-income, two-parent family will spend an average of $222,360 to raise a child born in 2009. The price tag only includes costs up to age 17, so parents also need to account for skyrocketing college tuition and the amount spent when little Billy moves back home with his $40K sociology degree and a dream of becoming a reality TV star.

Yeah you could buy a house for that amount. It'd be empty and sad though when you die alone.
