ABC books are a dime a dozen and often end up in the Goodwill box as soon as this elementary lesson is mastered, but when Darren J. Gendron, author of The Monster Alphabet, found out he was going to be a father, he wanted an experience where learning the alphabet was only the beginning of the educational adventure.
His “geeky update” has a three-fold purpose: That it be read to children, be a source for learning new things about a wide variety of cultures and encourage further research on the fantastic creatures presented. Call it Anthropology 101 for the preschool set, but this is the kind of book that would hold a prized place on any kid’s bookshelf for years to come.
