In 1898, the Winton Motor Carriage Company took out an ad in Scientific American for its horse-free, hydrocarbon motored Winton Motor Carriage. Robert Allison of Port Carbon, Pennsylvania became first person to purchase a Winton automobile after seeing the world’s first car advert.
