Totally disturbing ketchup packet

The design team at Publicis Mojo have successfully created the most disturbing ketchup packet this side of the McDonald’s condiment corner. Rather than pushing some sort of zombie horror flick, the gory packets promote landmine awareness.

The New Zealand Campaign Against Landmines explains the campaign:

Using a ketchup sachet, we demonstrated the horrific nature of living in a land mine affected country and how much a part of everyday life that horror is. The idea is simple: as you tear open the sachet you also rip through the child’s leg and the ketchup inside pours out like blood.

This is gurilla marketing also, marketing a message aginst landmine.
Good idea, it can also be promoted to prevent other mal practice.

In terms of a clever concept promoting awareness of a worthy cause I think this is excellent.

However, I have two faults with this:

1. I don't know what the impact on the internal representation the consumer will have for ketchup after tearing the child's leg off and having the ketchup ooze out. I suppose the objective of Publicis is not to protect the image of ketchup.
2. However important the topic, these are just not the images that belong on the dinner table occupied by children. Some will be curious, no doubt, others will be disturbed, and other still will probably make a game of it.

Still, it's a very powerful campaign concept, and the Publicis people deserve credit for their creativity.

Got to agree with anikolopoulos here. Definite case of cart before horse. Great advert, really really terrible ketchup dispenser.

I can see it now mum takes kid to mcd's, kid goes to dip fries in ketchup tears package..... sees package ....cries then is sick
mum sees package never eats ketchup again.

Zardt! I think the restaurant can choose whether or not to put these packets out. It's fine for bars and beatnick clubs. It's not like McDonald's is going to buy these in bulk. Freedom of fricken speech - humans. That's why I love it here so much.

Anyone who finds this distrubing apparently doesn't watch tv, read the newspaper or attend movies. Get real hypocrites...this is a brilliant and hopefully effective campaign. There is nothing tasteless about it. Pulp Fiction is tasteless. Get it?

Thats not freedom of speech Gretchen, that's traumatizing children at the dinner table. I agree with anikolopoulos in that some will be disturbed and others will want to make a game out of it, which is even more disturbing. Are there no boundaries to what our children have to be exposed to in public on a daily basis anymore? This is not teaching them to be empathetic to those children, it's sick and disrespectful. How many packages will it take before people just rip it open and toss it without giving it another thought. It's just desensitizing. I would walk out of any establishment that serves children if they carry that package. Who would feel like eating after tearing that open anyway?

Point in case.

If you do NOT find this disturbing, you watch too much TV and have become completed desensitized to the plight of others or you have had your heart replaced with a brick.

I think it's in perfect taste if this is what it takes to wake people up. Imagine that your child had lost a limb and nobody would do anything about it. You'd trade in the entire Heinz factory to raise awareness.

I do not look to my condiments for poltical or humanitary wisdom. Euthenized pets and aborted fetuses are equally unwelcome. People's vision can sure get blurred when they are fanatical about something!

I think is the right thing they have done to stop landmine... they should create some image or concept for cigarette packet cover.... those guys are not scared of those damaged brain, deadly face or mouth broken images....
