Twitter visualization reveals when we’re happiest

Does Thursday mid-morning drive you to points of frustration, depression, and overall cubicle stir-craziness? Take a small dose of comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

Northwestern University researcher Alan Mislove looked at 300 million tweets in an effort to gauge Americans’ moods by location and time. The content of the tweets yielded some interesting results:

  • The west coast expresses a cheerier disposition than the east.
  • Work doesn’t boost moods as people tweet the happiest thoughts in the morning and at night.
  • Thursdays are depressing.
  • Weekends spread smiles, cheer, and happiness.

Mislove also created an interesting visualization of his findings—green indicates a positive mood, red a negative one, and the size of an area signifies Twitter activity.
