Universe looks picture perfect according to the world’s largest digital camera
High on a mountaintop in Chile where the atmosphere allows for the clearest view of space, the cooperative effort of 120 scientists from around the world is providing us with some out-of-this-world shots of the universe.
The Dark Energy Camera uses “…62 separate CCD sensors and a 13-foot light-gathering mirror” to take 570 megapixel pictures of the sky, and is so sensitive that each picture “…shows over 100,000 separate galaxies that are up to 8 billion light years away.”
Before your own pictures start feeling small in comparison, comfort yourself that this camera doesn’t ask the universe to smile before taking a picture, so it lacks that personal touch.
