Want fewer frogs with extra legs? Add parasites
Harmful parasites, including one that causes malformed limbs in frogs, are less successful at infecting amphibians when there is a rich diversity of parasites.
“While our study was on amphibian diseases, there is ample evidence to suggest similar processes can be occurring in humans and other groups of animals,” says Pieter Johnson, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado.
