What car thieves really think of The Club

Media_httpdldropboxco_fbufn

For the paranoid car owners out there who still lovingly lock up their steering wheels with Clubs, you might want to check out this interesting article from Freakonomics. As it turns out, the gaudy car-theft 'deterrent' actually makes it easier for car thieves to jack your ride.

See, a pro thief only needs to carry a short piece of hacksaw blade to cut through the steel device, as opposed to a long and more noticeable pry bar. What’s more is that most car thieves actually seek out cars with a Club on them, because after they release it, they can use it to apply a huge amount of torque to the steering wheel and break the lock on the steering column (a feature that most cars are already equiped with).

The moral of the story here is to pay attention to any potential unintended consequences of the products you develop and/or purchase.

You mis-paraphrased the article: You use the hacksaw to cut through the steering wheel, not The Club. Only one cut through the weaker steering wheel needed. The Club then serves as the pry bar they no longer need to carry.
