What people lie about most on dating websites

Perusing the singles on online dating sites means browsing with a skeptical eye—Mr. Perfect may turn out to be Mr. Too Short or Mr. Lives With Mom or Mr. Casual Meth Habit. Everyone fiddles with the facts when it comes to creating a dating profile, but beware that too much fact fudging could lead to an awkward real-life encounter.

Tapping into its vast data from 1.5 million users, OKCupid tracked down the four most common fibs told by people on online dating sites. Not surprisingly, height stood tall (pun intended) as one of the most frequently lied about in profiles with people making themselves two inches taller online.

More findings from the online singles scene study:

  • Taller people (around 5’10” for women and 6’6” for men) tend to have more sex partners, but shorter women (up to 5’10”) receive more unsolicited messages per week.
  • Men lie about height, while woman are more likely to lie about their weight and build.
  • People have 20% less money than they portray online. Men’s dating lives suffer more from income disparities.
  • The more attractive a photo of a sexy single, the more likely the photo is out-of-date.
  • More than a third of the most sizzling snapshots are more than a year old.

I get a lot of calls on my advice line of both guys and girls complaining about this. It seems people are afraid to be who and what they truly are anymore. Most girls tell me that they are disappointed 90% of the time when meeting a guy from online for the first time and guys tell me that the girl never looks like her picture. Seems to be a dating culture trend here.
