Why content is more important than SEO

Check out this post by Dawn Foster as she explains what's more important: content or SEO. Here take on it is, "...writing compelling, interesting blog content that people will want to talk about and link to will get you around 95 percent of the way to good search engine rankings."

I agree. Google's in the business of finding good shiitake. You should be in the business of writing good shiitake. Read Dawn's tips for writing good shiitake here

It's true. Without any SEO, merely blogging, I have first page on Google for many of my key phrases. I'm about to embark on some SEO for another website - will be keen to see the difference.

We sometimes tend to make interesting, compelling content harder than it needs to be. As Dawn mentions, simple things like personal anecdotes help keep it not only interesting but original as well.

Very good information, I've always wondered about this. It seems like social media is a great equalizer in the search engine preference. An active popular blog is a stellar example.

I have been preaching this to my clients! Content is king! ie: Posterous blog seriously outperforms other paid SEO blogs and SEO in general hands down.

Could you please define "search engine"?

I think most people use that to mean Google.COM -- is THAT what you mean?

I stopped paying attention to Google years ago -- and since then, many other have also jumped ship. And now twitter and facebook are also overrun with spammers... and TBH your presence here gives me reason to worry that it's only a matter of time for posterous.

This Wisdom of the Language ( http://past.blog.com/gaggle-info-wiki/miscellaneous/articles/wisdom-of-the-language ) is the only reliable content (see also http://past.blog.com/2009/04/18/the-medium-is-the-message-and-the-domain-name-is-the-medium ) -- and that worked for twitter as long as random was cool. But not that bubbles are bursting (probably not really done with that one yet) random becomes a little bit out of touch.

Whatever -- nice idea though (i.e. forgetting the wisdom of the miserable failure ;) )...

I don't think there is such thing as Great Blog Content vs. Search Engine Optimization. SEO is about increasing traffic to your website through search engine results and that's exactly what great blog content does. So how can be content more important that SEO? It can't, because it's part of SEO.

I agree. We lose sight of what's the most important part of SEO. Focus on delivering content that your audience finds of value. Then you can apply all the other tips and tweaks to optimize it further. There's no substitute for great content. Unfortunately this SEO basic is often skipped over because it's easier to tweak keywords.
