Why do the eyes in paintings seem to follow you sometimes?
Posted by staff / April 8, 2010Do you ever have the feeling you’re being watched? The eyes in many paintings seem to follow you around the room. How do artists make it happen?
It turns out that it has to do with the way a painting is created and a canvas’ lack of the third dimension we find in real life. Thanks to the elements of shadow, light and perspective, some paintings give us the uncanny feeling of being watched.

I think it’s more because if the eyes are dark enough they seem holes in the painting through which someone could be watching. — @caricatutronico
