Why most marketers don't profit from social media

According to a recent study, marketers who generate increases in sales via social media are few and far between, and most web 2.0 marketing efforts bring in very little revenue. Social Media Examiner reviewed the data, and have highlighted the key differences betweeen successful social networking businesses and well, the unsuccessful ones. Here’s a sampling of what they found:

  • Companies who reported a sales increase thanks to social media were twice as likely to have a formal social media strategy in place.
  • They were also twice as likely to have a dedicated headcount for managing social media.
  • Fifty-three percent of those who weren’t reaping the benefits of social media marketing claimed they felt they were “behind the curve” of platforms like Twitter, Facebook, etc.

What do you think, marketers? Do these stats surprise you?
