Why Twitter and Facebook aren't enough

Do you think you only need a Twitter account and Facebook page? If you do, Joel Postman (and I) think you’re wrong. Said Postman: “Twitter is excellent for distribution, but if you’re going to communicate original ideas, you’ll need a blog (or something similar).” He then goes on to cite seven reasons why Twitter and Facebook are insufficient.

My use of Twitter reflects Postman’s beliefs on steroids. I use Twitter to drive traffic to Holykaw and to Alltop. I rarely use Twitter as the location of content.

I completely agree. Blogging gives people a better idea of what you have to say and how you say it. It enables readers a deeper insight that can't be achieve with 140 characters. You should also compliment your blog with owning your brand over other Social Media sites to reflect your interests.

The traffic driving drives me kinda crazy these days. Don't get me wrong... I like the sites and the blogs. But I'm working on a nifty way of viewing tweets and it seems to work better with (for example) @OGOchoCinco than @GuyKawasaki because Chad gets a lot of complete thoughts into individual tweets while Guy tends to get complete teases in there.

@CNN and @HeadlineNews also do a good job of summarizing and providing a link, rather than teasing. @FoxNews seems to be forwarding headlines and the get cut off or repeated.

Definitely. You need to have a site you 'own' for your own content. (no pun intended.) Facebook and Twitter are secondary to that... ~Sue

I find Twitter useful for driving traffic. I also find Twitter useful for group messaging, or even for DMs with a few select people, easier than looking up their phone number and texting - if I even have their phone number!

Posterous is a great tool for driving traffic too, well the daily email is, I look forward to it, and take a little time out each day to read though it, and go to links - it's how I got here to type this right now.
