Wi-Fi coming to New York City subways
Good news, anti-social New York commuters - soon you'll never have to look a fellow citizen in the eye again! According to Bloomberg, transit Wireless LLC (a conglomerate of wireless and construction companies) finally got together the funds necessary to move forward with their plans of installing Wi-Fi access to the NYC subway system. But outfitting every station it might be a slow process.
Transit Wireless LLChas two years to outfit six stations near New York’s Union Square, and then four more years for the other 271 platforms. The Wi-Fi comes in the form of smoke detector-size antennas, and will afford passengers access on platforms, mezzanines and in sections of the tunnels (not the whole tunnel).
When it’s all said and done, the project will cost $200 million dollars. And sure, the added connection to the Internet is exciting, but, as Mashable points out, that whole “I was stuck in a tunnel” excuse isn’t going to work so well anymore.
