Stuck between the music and social revolution of the sixties and the flash and glam of the eighties, the seventies are often overlooked thanks to the glare coming off the disco ball, but it was, in fact, a time of musical beginnings, the influence of which would be felt for generations to come.

Not surprisingly, the mean streets of 1970’s New York – from Manhattan to the Bronx – had a huge role to play in the birth of the genres of hip-hop, punk and, yes, disco, as the BBC documents in “Once Upon a Time in New York – The Birth of Hip Hop, Disco & Punk.” Makes you want to dust off that 8-track player and get your goove on.
