We lost a lot of men and B-17’s during the war against Germany until the P-51 Mustang was able to escort the bombers into Germany and back to England. When the P-51 came onboard the US ruled the skies over Germany. If the F-8 Grumman Bearcat had been available, we would have knocked all of Germany’s fighters out of the air much quicker.

My father in law was 6’2″ tall and he was a tail gunner on a B-17. He was shot down on his 24th mission while bombing Nuremberg Germany. He was placed in a series of concentration camps toward the end of the war and liberated by George Patton and his troops
