How dodgy DNA freed Amanda Knox


The poor handling of DNA evidence played a starring role in the appeal of American student Amanda Knox this week and led to her release from a prison in Perugia, Italy.

The validity of the main forensic evidence, microscopic amounts of DNA on the murder weapon and on a bra clasp, was thrown into doubt. Amanda Knox’s appeal, which began last November, was dominated by the re-examination of the DNA evidence. In 2009, American forensic experts sent a letter to the Italian judge outlining their concerns over the mishandling of evidence.
