The photographers behind history’s most iconic images
Photographers play a part in history, but because of their position behind the camera, their presence can easily go unnoticed. Tim Mantoani brings photographers into focus with Behind Photographers: Archiving Photographic Legends, a book filled with portraits of photographers posing with their most famous images.
“I felt like there was kind of this void,” Mantoani shared with Wired. “There were all these anonymous photographers out there who have not been given enough credit.”
The San Diego-based photog launched the project five years ago with just a handful of participants. Those first photographers helped Mantoani reach others, and the series grew to include some of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
