If it weren’t for engineers, life as we know it would not exist. In honour of this noble profession, take a moment to remember the ten most significant engineers who had no blueprints or guidelines to go buy—just vision, passion, and genius.

Number ten is Alan Turing. Name doesn’t ring a bell? Well, the computer you’re using right now exists because of Alan Turing. The father of computer science invented the binary architecture now used in all computers. Add this to his numerous other technological contributions, and Turing has earned himself a spot as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

Number two is Thomas Edison, the prolifc inventor who holds a record 1,097 patents. He developed the phonograph, incandescent light bulb, stock ticker, motion picture camera and projector—and hundreds more. Without Edison, modern life is almost inconceivable.
