Top reasons people get blocked or unfriended on social media

Posted by / August 5, 2013

“Many view their social media pages as a place where they can voice their opinions and show off pieces of their lives. However, there’s a fine line between being you and being annoying, especially on Facebook and Twitter, where it’s harder for someone to tell your tone.”

Wondering what can cause people to unfriend, block, or uncircle you?

1. Oversharing
2. Being a negative Nelly
3. Politics or religion typically a no-no
4. Using foul language — Definitely a block from me
5. Online fueding – Save the drama for your mama. For real. No one cares.

Handle yourself with grace and you don’t need to worry about it later. As my mom told me, everyone isn’t going to like everyone else.

And that’s ok.

Choice your friends and associates wisely. Positive friends can bring great joy to your social world. If people are being jerks trying to push your buttons, hit your button. The block button and move on.

If they go from annoying to bullies or trolls. here’s more advice from Guy Kawasaki “A troll will respond with anger, negativism, and hostility, but people who had a temporary trollish moment will make a reasonable and intelligent response.”

  • its ok God knows whats in their hearts

  • My troll began stalking me online & then sending his followers when I blocked him. 🙁

I googled his email address & found an ad on Craigslist with phone number, then found his name. Now When he comments, I use his name to agree with "part" of his comment..

Trolls don't want to be outed!

  • +Peg Fitzpatrick Maybe that's your next post? Social media is like junior high! 🙂

  • +Penelope W That's funny! I think someone wrote one about something similar, It's a great idea.

  • Over sharing was what ultimately drove me away from Facebook. I thought it reduced substance and quality of the news stream's content because people were going for quantity rather than quality. Useless and unfunny inner thoughts, repeated vanity photos, or their current location at Costco got wildly out of control and just added to the madness. Thank God for Google+ and it's article driven site. The level of IQ is also significantly higher here, so a shmuck like me actually feel like I'm smart too =P

  • All, here's an easy hack to avoid over sharing on Facebook or Google+ (also not nearly the same issue here for me): 1) Put all friends whose content you consistently appreciate into a Friend List; 2) when you're done add that list to your main left sidebar; 3) in your browser(s), make that list your "FB home" instead of facebook.com/username. Now you've taken control of your FB experience. Access all friends via your main news stream. I did this a couple months ago and love it, I feel I have FB back. Of course move people on n off your main list to keep refining, it's easy!

  • On social media manners, I follow what my wonderful mother-in-law used to say, "Life is much more pleasant when you deal with mannerly people."

  • I've been quite lucky and 'troll free'.  I'm quite chilled and don't often uncircle people unless they are really offensive!

  • I almost want to post this to Facebook b/c there are plenty of people I have blocked for probably every reason on the list!

  • I have a circle called "SilentCircle" that shows no feeds on my stream. It is for people who over share (and basically spam) my stream. I am interested in hearing a lot of divergent views, read different things from a lot of DIFFERENT people. But some folks don't get it. They post one after another after another…. perhaps trying to stay on top of your stream. And they end up in my SilentCircle.
    2, 3, 4 and 5 just get uncircled. Gone!

  • For the most part, I'll just uncircle or unfriend someone who goes on and on and on about their pedicures, politics, etc. If they notice and ask me, I'll tell them why.

What bothered me about constant stream of social/political commentary from a couple of people was that not only were they behaving online in a way that they would never behave offline (boorishly assuming the room gives an enthusiastic thumbs up to their social/political leanings) and in doing so make sure their social network consists of people who think exactly like them, but that my annoyance with them lead me to remove them and consequently makes my social network more homogenous.

  • True!

  • Good list and I agree with all of them except the swearing bit.

If its all the time and its just because its part of their vocabulary then fair enough.
….. Sometimes in context it can be entertaining. I’ve never switched off a funny comedian because he threw an F-bomb in there!!

You forgot one on the list……. Just having an ex as a friend gets you deleted sometimes. 🙂
